,Adopted 30 June 1963
,This design, without the word “Kansas”, was adopted on 23 March 1927. The sunflower is the state flower, the wreath symbolizes the Louisiana Purchase and the 34 stars record the fact that Kansas was the 34th state admitted to the Union. The state motto “To the stars through difficulties” reflects the political trials of Kansas prior to joining the Union, A man ploughing with horses represents agriculture as the basis of the future prosperity of the state, and the steamboat is a symbol of commerce, The past of Kansas is represented by a settler’s cabin, a train of ox wagons going west and a herd of buffalo retreating, pursued by two native Americans on horseback..
