Buff is the regimental color of the New Jersey Continental Line prescribed by General G. Washington in 1779. Buff became the color of the field of state regimental color in 1780. The main device of the arms is three ploughs as New Jersey was the third state admitted to the Union. The figures of Liberty and Ceres (the goddess of agriculture) support the arms. The horse's head symbolizes vigor. ☼
