Adopted 28 January 1851The crescent refers to the badge with the inscription Liberty or Death' worn on the caps of the soldiers of two regiments formed in South Carolina in 1775 who fought during the American Revolution. The palmetto tree is a symbol of victory adopted in 1776 after the fort at Sullivan's Island in Charleston harbor defeated the British fleet.
