The blue flag with the arms was adopted on 29 April 1913. In 1981 the word 'Wisconsin and the date 1848 (admission to the Union) were added. The shield of arms displays symbols of agriculture mining manufacture and navigation. The arms and motto of the United States symbolize the allegiance of the state to the union and the badger refers to its nickname the Badger State. The main branches of the economy mining and agriculture are represented by lead ore and a cornucopia. The sailor and the miner symbolize labour on water and on land.
